- Diegetic sound- Sound that can be seen on the screen e.g. voices of characters.
- Non-Diegetic sound- Sound that you can't see on the screen e.g. narrator.
- Ambient sound- Background noise in present scene to create an atmosphere.
- Sound effects- Created sounds used to emphasise what is happening in the scene.
- Mood- Sound that is used to create ambiance e.g tension, romance, sadness.
- Tone- Sound that is measured by it's pitch, quality and strength.
- Genre- Category or style that films will be places into e.g. horror, musical, comedy etc.
- Theme Music- A piece of music that is specifically for that film.
- Voiceover- Narration of a film, play or broadcast where you can't see the speaker.
- Musical Score- Music that has been written/composed and the instruments/artists involved have their own composition sheet.
- Synchronous sound- When the sound effect in a scene is linked with another event or action.
- Asynchronous sound- Sound that is not synchronised with the scene.
- Contrapuntal- Complex music which is played/sounded together at the same time.
- Silence- The lack of audio sound.
- Selective sound- Removal of some sounds to make significant sounds more recognisable this is often used to cause dramatic effect.
- Sound bridges- Carry over of the sound from the previous scene.
